With some state government officials fighting hard to limit or ban ly stayed out of the spotlight. This changed with the releasing of the findings of the Productivity Commission, which went in a very different direction from the government’s position. The commission has advised the government to ease, and eventually abolish, it’s harsh limits on online gambling. In it’s rejection of the proposals by the commission the government spokesman Stephan Conroy fell back on the position that easing limits on online gambling would lead to an increase in problem gambling, despite the commission’s findings to the contrary. He also hinted at what most people suspect is the real reason behind this and other online casino bans, money. Although the fact that online casinos don’t generate tax revenue for the Australian government was only mentioned in passing, the fact that it was mentioned at all is most likely indicative. Australia is said to be involved in talks with the US about how to better implement their ban. Ironically, this is being done at the same time that US lawmakers begin debates on repealing their ban, partly because it’s too difficult to enforce.
